Guest: Elaine Simons, Foster Mother of Jesse Sarey

Elaine is a survivor of police-sanctioned violence. She has tirelessly been on the front line since May 31st, 2019 when her foster son Jesse Sarey's life was taken from him by Officer Jeff Nelson of Auburn, WA.

Officer Jeff Nelson was arrested and charged for 2nd Degree Murder and 1st Degree Assault. He has been on paid administrative house arrest since August 2020.

Elaine Simons, Foster Mother of Jesse Sarey

Elaine is a survivor of police-sanctioned violence. She has tirelessly been on the front line since May 31st, 2019 when her foster son Jesse Sarey life was taken from him by Officer Jeff Nelson of Auburn, WA.

With activists across the nation Justice for Jesse Sarey Campaign was started in partnership with Forced Trajectory Project. We hosted a zoom panel on I-940 with Deputy Mayor Monisha Harrell and Harvard Law students. (2022)

She served on the: *WACPA - Washington Coalition for Police Accountability Impacted Family Member- Help write bills and testifying. (September 2020-2021)

She joined Mass Action Against Police Brutality Impacted Families and marched on WA DC with over 300 Justice Families across America Summer 2021.

Awards/ Recognition on Re- Imagine Policing:
* The Changing Paths Award from “The If Project” (2019)

Wrote an Op-ed for ACLU on Policing in WA State “The Silence is Maddening” (November 2021)

*Received The ACLU WCPA- Kathleen Taylor Civil Libertarian Award (2021)

Coordinated: Washington Impacted Families Speak Out- In partnership with community activists I hosted a virtual rally of Impacted Families of Police Violence. Over 23 families participated to share their loss of loved ones. (2020)

She had traveled nationally to support other impacted families in this fight for police reform.

She continues to build community across the nation to bring awareness to police violence against civilians. In April she will be traveling to Chicago to join the Mamie Till Mobley family to honor her in the unveiling of a statue at her old Highschool.

Elaine Co wrote with Detective Kim Bogucki and PSKS youth “Donut Dialogue”, a community interaction between homeless young adults and cops, this program has been replicated locally and nationally (2001-present)
