Mothers For Police Accountability has been working for three decades to build bridges between our communities and law enforcement. We strongly support the King County Equity Now coalition, including Africatown Community Land Trust, Creative Justice, No New Youth Jail, and other community organizations. Africatown has continued to build upon the 140 year legacy of the Central Area African-American community by advocating for community ownership of land that can support the cultural and economic thriving of people who are part of the African diaspora in the Greater Seattle region.

Because Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County has revoked their endorsement of King County Equity Now, including Africatown, we are returning their $25,000 grant. In order to maintain our organization’s integrity and transparency, we feel that accepting the grant could help further division within our community.

We will continue to foster communication and bridge-building as we work to reimagine policing in the 21st century. What is happening in America now makes Mothers For Police Accountability even more determined to fight for safety and justice for African-American communities and our neighbors. Our blackness is not a crime.
